JEFFERSON, MO. — A 23-year-old Jefferson City man is facing felony charges after a 4-month-old baby girl was hospitalized with multiple injuries that authorities say were consistent with physical abuse.
Noah J. Humphus was arrested following an investigation by the Jefferson City Police Department after the infant was taken to Capital Region Medical Center on September 2, 2026.
Because of the nature and severity of the injuries, detectives took over the investigation, and the child was later transported to University Hospital in Columbia for further treatment.
According to the probable-cause statement reported by local news outlets, doctors identified bruising and multiple fractures involving the infant’s ribs and legs.
The injuries appeared to be in different stages of healing, according to the reported court documents.
Investigators reportedly interviewed the child’s mother, who said Humphus had been caring for the infant while she was working.
In the probable-cause statement, she told investigators she had witnessed Humphus shaking the baby on multiple occasions.
Police also reported that Humphus later admitted to shaking the infant.
He demonstrated on a doll how he handled the child, including holding her upside down by her legs.
The circumstances described have drawn significant concern because the victim was only four months old and completely dependent upon the adults responsible for her care.
Humphus was arrested and is being held without bond at the Cole County Jail.
Local reporting indicates he has been charged in connection with the abuse, including child abuse, first-degree domestic assault, first-degree endangering the welfare of a child and abuse or neglect of a child causing serious physical or emotional injury.
A CHILD WHO COULD NOT PROTECT HERSELF
Cases involving infants serve as a painful reminder of the responsibility adults have when caring for children who cannot speak for themselves or protect themselves.
A four-month-old baby should be able to depend on the adults around her for safety, protection, gentleness and care.
Every child deserves that.
Our thoughts remain with this infant and everyone working to ensure that she receives the medical care, protection and support she needs.
