INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA — A 3-month-old baby girl, Jaymalyn, died after suffering severe injuries while in the care of her father, Curtis Jenkins, who has been charged with murder in connection with her death.
According to police and court records described in reporting about the case, investigators were called after Jaymalyn was found in critical condition.
She was transported to Riley Hospital for Children, where doctors identified multiple serious injuries.
The investigation ultimately became a homicide case after medical professionals determined that the child’s injuries could not be explained by the circumstances initially reported to authorities.
911 Call and Initial Explanation
According to investigators, Jenkins eventually called 911 and claimed that the baby had become too hot inside a vehicle without air conditioning.
However, doctors reportedly discovered injuries that investigators said were inconsistent with heat exposure.
Investigators say medical findings could not be explained by heat exposure as initially claimed.
The medical findings reportedly included three brain bleeds, broken ribs and retinal hemorrhaging, among other serious injuries.
These findings prompted investigators to examine what had occurred while Jaymalyn was in Jenkins’ care.
What was Reported to Investigators:
One of the most disturbing elements described in the investigative records involves sounds captured or heard.
According to the allegations reported in the case, screams, loud thuds, smacking sounds and what sounded like a car seat hitting the floor.
Jenkins could be heard screaming:
“Yeah, I’m torturing you.”
The statement and sounds described in the investigative reports became part of the evidence authorities examined as they reconstructed the events surrounding the infant’s injuries.
Jaymalyn’s Injuries
Medical professionals reportedly determined that Jaymalyn had suffered extensive trauma.
According to the information provided in the case reporting, the infant suffered:
* Three brain bleeds
* Broken ribs
* Retinal hemorrhaging
* Spinal hemorrhaging
Investigators say the injuries raised serious concerns that the infant had been violently injured rather than suffering from an accidental medical emergency.
Because Jaymalyn was only three months old, she was completely dependent upon the adults caring for her and unable to communicate what had happened.
A Mother’s Concerns
Investigators also reportedly interviewed Jaymalyn’s mother regarding the circumstances surrounding her daughter’s care.
According to the reported investigation, the mother had expressed concerns about leaving Jaymalyn alone with Jenkins.
Authorities reportedly examined the circumstances surrounding the period when Jenkins was caring for the infant and whether any previous concerns involving his other children were relevant to the investigation.
Jenkins was ultimately charged with murder in connection with Jaymalyn’s death.
A Baby’s Life Should Have Been Just Beginning
Jaymalyn was only three months old.
She should have been beginning a lifetime of first moments—her first smiles, first words, first steps and countless birthdays still ahead of her.
Instead, her life ended before it had truly begun.
Her death is a painful reminder of the extraordinary vulnerability of infants and the responsibility placed on every adult entrusted with their care.
When a child cannot speak for themselves, the evidence must speak for them.
It is about remembering Jaymalyn.
It is about asking difficult questions.
It is about understanding the warning signs of child abuse and the importance of taking concerns seriously.
And it is about ensuring that vulnerable children are never forgotten once the headlines fade.
