🚨SIX FAMILY MEMBERS KILLED IN IOWA SHOOTING‼️

MUSCATINE, IOWA — A Iowa community was left grieving after six members of the same family were killed in a series of shootings on June 1, 2026.

According to the Muscatine Police Department, officers were dispatched shortly after noon to a residence on Park Avenue after receiving a report of a shooting.

Four people were found deceased inside the home.

Investigators subsequently located two additional victims at separate locations in the city.

Police said the victims were believed to be family members of the suspect.

Police identified 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland of Muscatine as the suspect.

Officers later located McFarland on the city’s riverfront trail near a pedestrian bridge.

Police reported that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after officers confronted him.

Investigators said their preliminary findings indicated that the shootings stemmed from a domestic-related dispute.

The investigation involved multiple crime scenes and assistance from the Muscatine Fire Department, Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

REMEMBERING THE VICTIMS

Police identified the six victims as:

~ Lesa McFarland, 51

~ Dakota Whitlow, 32

~ Austin Harris, 29

~ Ryle McFarland, 20

~ Mark McFarland, 16

~ Ryan McFarland Jr., 13

Two of the victims were students in the Muscatine Community School District, while two others were district employees.

Ryle McFarland had recently graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in elementary education and had completed student teaching in the Muscatine school district.

She was preparing to begin her professional career as an educator.

Mark McFarland had just completed his junior year of high school, while Ryan McFarland Jr. had completed seventh grade.

The tragedy also left a surviving family member, Johnathan McFarland, who spoke during a community vigil and remembered his mother and siblings.

The Muscatine case is a painful reminder that domestic violence can affect entire families and communities.

When violence occurs within a household, children can be among those directly harmed, witness violence against someone they love, or experience lasting emotional consequences even when they are not physically injured.

Warning signs should never be ignored.

Threats, escalating violence, stalking, coercive control, intimidation, threats involving weapons, threats to children or loved ones, and escalating conflict can all warrant serious attention and intervention.

We remember the six lives lost in Muscatine—not simply as names connected to a tragic headline, but as mothers, fathers, siblings, children, students, educators, friends and loved ones whose lives mattered.
